Between Svanninge Bakker and the archipelago, in the transition between land and water, lies the "Øhavsmuseet" on the harbor in Faaborg. With the location of the museum in the old Frølager-building, the museum is already today part of the port's historical collage of existing red buildings with fine mutual characteristics that have arisen over time, built from the available materials, board by board, grown with extensions, and roof shapes adapted to functions such as chimneys and smokehouses. This is the architecture and atmosphere that our project intends to carry forward.
In dialogue with the harbour.
A series of red building volumes merge with the old brick warehouse. In this way, the "Øhavsmuseet" will be able to create a transition between the characteristic red roofs of Faaborg city center and the harbor's inherent complex architecture, built over time. With the characteristic roof shapes, the "Øhavsmuseet" creates a landmark, which furthermore gently adapts to the human scale.
The new link, uses the spatial and structural qualities which are found in the old warehouse. New and old is connected by a common architectural expression yet varied.
The juxtaposed building volumes with characteristic roofs create a landmark with respect for the architecture of the local environment, which is characterized by its composition: sloping roofs and smokehouse chimneys.
Faaborg DNA
Sketches showing how the new museum relates to the context characterized by the “red collage” of the harbors industrial buildings and red roofs of the historic city of Faaborg.
Siteplan
The existing tree on the site is preserved and used as a positive ‘obstruction’ to create a natural landscape pocket between new and old. This motif is repeated around the building, thereby creating a series of smaller niches where the landscape can be connected closely with the large glass sections of the museum. This creates a great connection between the outdoor and indoor landscapes of the exhibition. The new Øhavs-plaza towards South is shaped as a playground relation to the archipelago. Green end blue elements change over the seasons and the time of the day.
Inviting the public
A strong dialogue arises between the existing and new buildings. An urban pocket garden is created around the existing tree, with potential for a future entrance situation, from which the meeting function can also be entered by the public.
Contextual relation
The new museum seen from the Old Smokehouse at Havnegade. The characteristic roofs of the new extension play together in terms of shape, which is found in both the historic city center, the industrial warehouses on the harbor as well as the smokehouses.
